The Royal Air Force Cold Weather M1951 Parka
Step into the world of aviation history with The Royal Air Force Cold Weather M1951 Parka. This extraordinary piece of outerwear is a testament to the unparalleled craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into its original creation, with its Ventile shell and real fur hood trim.
Originally crafted for "flight line" service personnel for use during Arctic conditions, this authentic 1951 Pattern RAF Ventile Parka in size 3 is considered a truly rare find.
Made in the 1970s, with a green-coloured Ventile cotton material that is renowned for its exceptional windproof and waterproof qualities, ensuring both comfort and warmth even in the most extremely cold temperatures.
Every detail of this parka has been carefully considered. The front fastens with a 'NZ' branded zipper, featuring a nickel-plated puller that adds a touch of sophistication. To enhance its windproof capabilities, the coat is also equipped with a double flap that buttons over the zip, providing an extra layer of insulation. An integral waist belt is located to the centre of the parka and features a metal buckle of the same style, a common attribute of Ventile smocks, parkas and flying suits during the 1950s and 1960s.
An angled flapped pocket adds a touch of functionality to the parka, allowing the wearer to keep essentials close at hand. The real fur hood trim adds a luxurious touch, elevating the parka's aesthetic and making it a true statement piece.
A white drawstring is fitted to the bottom hem to allow the coat to be pulled in tight at the bottom. The hood features a similar drawstring which has a wooden stopper, shaped in an amazingly large snorkel style. The hood can be fastened tight using the wooden toggle to keep extra warm. A pen pocket is located to the left sleeve and is similar to those used on American flying jackets, first seen in WW2.
The interior of the parka features a cream blanket lining between the outer Ventile fabric and the cotton lining, which is stitched to the inside of the cream-coloured wool. Part of the interior of the hood features a soft, brown coloured fur collar, with a convenient hanging loop below. The original label is still attached and bears the RAF stores number of ‘22C/1301246’, the marked size ‘7’. and the department broad arrow marking.
This parka is not just a piece of outerwear, it is a symbol of bravery, resilience, and timeless style. Embrace the spirit of adventure and honour the legacy of the Royal Air Force.
